The 12 Days of Holiday Fraud – Day 2: Requests for Charitable Gifts

The winter holidays are upon us and scams that leverage the holiday season to target you are in full effect right now. 

We’re taking that questionable holiday classic The 12 Days of Christmas and dropping the needle on our version warning about the top 12 scams we see leading up to the holidays. 

Today, we present Day 2 of Holiday Fraud – “On the second day of the holidays, my scammer targeted me with  . . .” 

DAY 2: REQUESTS FOR CHARITABLE GIFTS 

Fraudsters know, unlike them, most people have a good heart and will be making donations to help others at this time of year. 

Before giving to charity use one of the following the sites to confirm the charity is legit: 

Holiday Tips 

  • Don’t assume solicitations for charitable donations on social media or crowdfunding sites are legitimate – even in posts that are shared or liked by your friends. 
  • Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a donation. This is a common tactic of scammers to get you to act without thinking.  
  • Don’t make charitable donations by a gift card or wiring money. The safest method is by credit card.
