Mark Smith, CPA/PFS
Mark Smith’s goal is to always serve clients and their families “beyond the bottom line.” That means helping them create long-term wealth and successfully navigate complex financial decisions. Not just by delivering historical information, but by providing true wealth management services that look ahead, well into the future. It’s proactive, purposeful wealth management, and it involves planning for financial freedom and the road in front of you.
As a wealth advisor, Mark helps clients gain a clear understanding of their unique concerns, needs and goals. He then works to create a forward-looking financial plan tailored to their individual circumstances, one that addresses portfolio management, tax strategy, retirement income planning, risk management, wealth transfer considerations and education planning. What he finds most rewarding is helping clients achieve financial independence and solve their financial challenges, allowing them to spend their time enjoying life and fulfilling the goals that matter most to them.
Mark has been in the financial services industry for more than 45 years. He joined Buckingham Strategic Wealth through the firm’s 2016 merger with Bourbonnais-based Solutions for Wealth Management, where he served as managing member. Mark founded Solutions in 1995. He also founded and was president of the CPA firm Smith, Koelling, Dykstra & Ohm P.C. from 1975 until 2011. Early in his career, he was the sole proprietor of his own accounting firm.
Mark earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Lewis University in 1971. He is a CPA and holds the Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) professional designation.
Outside of work, Mark serves as the treasurer for several organizations, including the Bishop McNamara Catholic High School Foundation, Kankakee Community College Foundation and Kankakee Country Club. He is also a board member and past president of the Kankakee Development Corporation. Mark’s passion for education has led him to serve on various private school boards over the past 30 years.
A lifelong resident of Kankakee, Mark is married to his high school sweetheart, Ruth, with whom he enjoys a daily (and competitive) game of backgammon or cards. They have been married for 46 years and have three children and three grandchildren. He enjoys playing golf and traveling.
