Wealth Advisor

Advisory Team Leader

Helen Modly, CFP®, CPWA®

Helen Modly’s father died unexpectedly when she was in her early 20s. Her mother’s struggle and eventual success at gaining control over her financial future shaped Helen’s desire to help others facing similar situations. She entered the investment industry in 1981 and, after almost 20 years of seeing how many companies package and pitch investment products, Helen started her own firm, Focus Wealth Management, which joined Buckingham Strategic Wealth in 2017.

Her passion to create a “client first — client only” culture and a fee-only firm came as a reaction to the vastly unlevel playing field that exists for most investors. Helen’s promise to clients is to act solely in their best interest. She seeks to understand clients’ complete financial situations and objectives, so they can work together to develop a plan for managing investments and achieving future goals.

Helen has an almost insatiable intellectual curiosity and professional energy. She has earned the Chartered Financial Consultant, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and Certified Private Wealth Advisor℠ designations. Helen is a prolific writer, and her columns appear regularly in MorningstarAdvisor and Horsesmouth.com. She is recognized as a specialist in retirement income planning and is frequently quoted in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Money Magazine, Business Week and The Washington Business Journal. She enjoys speaking on financial planning and investment topics and has presented at both local and national financial planning conferences, local bar associations and CPA groups.

Helen is a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) and is a past president of the Financial Planning Association National Capital Area (FPA NCA) Board of Directors. She was also selected as the 2010 Financial Planner of the Year by the membership of FPA NCA and is regularly named as a top financial professional by Washingtonian Magazine and The NOVA Magazine.
