Larry Swedroe and Kevin Grogan Release Reducing The Risk of Black Swans

Authors Larry Swedroe and Kevin Grogan have combined their almost 50 years of collective experience in investment analysis and research and their passion for evidence-based investing to produce Reducing the Risk of Black Swans: Using the Science of Investing to Capture Returns with Less Volatility.

In the book, Swedroe and Grogan discuss the benefits of a long-term portfolio that pairs riskier but low- correlating asset classes with a large allocation to very high quality bonds to provide returns comparable to a standard stock/bond mix but with much lower risk. This lower-risk approach helps insulate investors from those unforeseen events that can result in large losses, known in the investment world as Black Swans. “This portfolio is particularly optimal for investors who have already accumulated wealth and are in the preservation stage, because it focuses on dropping the volatility but saving the returns. It’s an allocation whose efficiency is supported by the science of investing, decades of academic and professional research,” says Swedroe.

Swedroe is the Director of Research for Buckingham and the BAM ALLIANCE, a community of more than 140 independent wealth advisory firms across the country. He is a prolific writer, having written or co-written more than a dozen books on investing and contributing weekly to multiple outlets including CBS MoneyWatch.com, Seeking Alpha and ETF.com. Swedroe’s dedication to helping investors has made him a sought-after national speaker. He has made appearances on national television shows airing on NBC, CNBC, CNN and Bloomberg Personal Finance. He holds an MBA in finance and investment from New York University, and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Baruch College in New York.

Grogan is the director of investment analysis for Buckingham and the BAM ALLIANCE. This is the second book he’s co-written with Larry. The first, The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need for the Right Financial Plan, was published in 2010. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst. He holds an MBA from Saint Louis University and a bachelor’s of science in finance from Missouri State University in Springfield.

“We wrote this book in hopes of opening the minds of investors, both professional advisors that want to know more about how we think about investing and sophisticated investors who want to take their knowledge to the next level, “says Grogan.
