Buckingham Names Its 2017 Pillar Grant Recipients
Eight nonprofit organizations have been awarded funding in 2017 as part of Buckingham Strategic Wealth’s Pillar Grant Program. This year’s recipients are: Caring for Kids, Inc., Clinic With a Heart Inc., Crime Victim Advocacy Center, Forest Park Forever, LCMS National Housing Support Corporation, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) St. Louis, Santa Rosa Community Health and West Houston Assistance Ministries.
The Pillar Grant Program, an annual multifaceted philanthropy effort launched in 2015, is the firm’s most significant philanthropic initiative and seeks to support the missions of organizations working to better the lives of people in the communities that Buckingham calls home.
Pillar Grant committee seeks to recognize organizations whose projects demonstrate three key pillars of the Buckingham experience — conscientious planning, carefully articulated evidence and a commitment to “doing the right thing.” In 2017, the two areas of interest in focus were Community Development Through Entrepreneurship and Wellness.
The important work the firm’s 2017 Pillar Grant recipients will pursue includes:
Caring for Kids, Inc.
Caring for Kids immediately provides essential resources to meet the urgent needs of abused, neglected or at-risk children in St. Louis County. Their needs range from very basic, such as bus passes or school supplies, to more substantial – like eyeglasses or tutoring.
Clinic With a Heart Inc.
A faith-inspired organization, Clinic with a Heart serves the uninsured and underinsured through a ministry of health care. The nonprofit serves as a gateway to other human service agencies, helping patients find an appropriate health care home.
Crime Victim Advocacy Center
CVAC helps victims of any and all crime and their families with a full range of advocacy and crisis intervention services. All services are free of charge and available to victims, families and community members affected by crime and violence.
Forest Park Forever
Forest Park Forever is a conservancy that partners with the City of St. Louis to restore, maintain and sustain Forest Park to ensure it is beautiful and welcoming — now and forever.
LCMS National Housing Support Corporation
The LCMS National Housing Support Corporation’s vision is for restored and revitalized neighborhoods that are anchored by LCMS congregations. Its mission is to provide access to capital and customized consulting services for underserved neighborhoods in order to transform them into thriving communities.
National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) St. Louis
NAMI St. Louis’ mission is to improve the quality of life of persons with severe and persistent mental illness and their families, and promote and provide community support, education, advocacy, and understanding.
Santa Rosa Community Health
Santa Rosa Community Health serves its community by having a mission to provide excellent, culturally responsive, comprehensive primary care that is accessible to all people.
West Houston Assistance Ministries
WHAM has been, and continues to be, “a door of hope” for West Houston children, families and homeless people in crisis. Offering assistance in meeting the essentials of daily living, WHAM matches client needs with available services and programs, including financial assistance, job search, food pantry, low cost second-hand items and special programs.
We selected our areas of interest earlier in the year, without knowing that People in Sudden Crisis would hit so close to home for the Santa Rosa and Houston communities. Our grants to the Santa Rosa Community Health and West Houston Assistance Ministries carry particular meaning, given that these organizations are located in areas that experienced widespread devastation and significant hardship following the respective Northern California wildfires and Hurricane Harvey.
These eight organizations were carefully selected following a detailed review process. The committee sought applicants that demonstrated our three key pillars, which are the driving force behind the work we continue to do for our clients every day: efforts that are supported by carefully articulated evidence; conscientious planning that ensures the project is sustainable and addresses the long-term needs and goals of the organization; and, most of all, a commitment to “do the right thing.”
